Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module aims to develop the skills of literary analysis and criticism with a focus on English literature and on novels and short fiction in particular.

Syllabus:

Intended as a foundational course for students moving from second to third level models of studying literature(s) in English, students will be introduced to the basic skills necessary to develop critical readings of literary texts. Literary genres will be addressed within the module with primary texts drawn from British and American prose fiction. Basic elements of literary theory will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Examine British and American prose texts in their cultural, social, and political contexts; Relate these texts to literary traditions; Distinguish between different prose genres; Interpret and analyse texts through an established process of close reading; Define, identify and describe different styles of rhetoric; Draft and write an academic composition.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

This module should augment students' critical appreciation of literary artefacts by exposing them to the stylistic, historical and cultural factors involved in the creation of literature.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module consists of two lectures and one tutorial per week. Students will be engaged in active learning both inside and outside the classroom and will be encouraged to carry out self-directed work (e.g. library and research projects) related to the material covered on this module.
